Punctuated with citrus fruit and cinnamon spice aromas, this delightful, award winning coffee from the 2009 Costa Rica Cup of Excellence has a full bodied, creamy mouth-feel and sparkling acidity in the finish. An outstanding all-day drinking coffee, best suited to cafetieres, filters and percolators.
Finca La Pira is well positioned in the Tarrazú region of Costa Rica, within the breath taking Dota Valley. The subtle climatic changes provide optimum temperatures for the production of this exquisite coffee. The name ‘La Pira’ comes from Carlos’ father Gilberto Ureña who was nicknamed “Piro” and sowed the seeds for success half a century ago.
Carlos had a background of producing organic coffee but upon inheriting the farm found organic production costs too high and now simply uses sustainable production methods. Sheep are encouraged to graze amongst the seven hectares of Finca La Pira and help to fertilize the coffee trees and eliminate the need for herbicides. The coffee leaves remain untouched as they do not appeal to the sheep that thankfully prefer the weeds!
The semi-washed process - leaving a little of the sweet, sticky mucilage on the beans as the dry in the sun – lends the coffee a sweeter, caramel like fragrance. This is a 7 hectare farm producing fine Dota Tarrazú coffee from the Caturra Arabica varietal at an altitude of 1650 metres above sea level. We enjoyed this award winning lot of coffee so much that we also bought some additional coffee produced by this farm.
